How does private equity work, and how do you become a private equity investor? I am 18 years old and I have an interest in the idea of becoming a private equity investor if I manage to accumulate enough starting capital. How does one go about becoming a private equity investor and becoming a multibillionaire like roman abramovich of millhouse capital, or prince alwaleed bin talal of the kingdom holding company? Please could somebody help explain. Thanks.
What's the difference between private equity funds and hedge fund? I read in Business Weekly that pension funds, university endowments, and other big investors invest in hedge funds and private equity funds. An accompanying graph shows that private equity funds had much higher returns than hedge funds in 2006 and 2007, but also greater losses in 2008. What is the difference between the two? Do they invest in different products? If not, on what base would a pension fund choose whether to invest in one or the other? Thank you!
I am raising money for a private equity fund and do not have a securities license. Is there a way around that? I am raising money for a limited partnership that will be an alternative type of investment fund. I am the soliciting broker for the managing partner of the fund. The primary equity sources are private equity firms and other funds. I do not have a securities license but I have read SEC regulations and there seems to be a bit of a gray area. Can someone in the industry shed some light on ways of successfully recruiting the capital with out being in breach of SEC regulations? Thank you.
From top management consulting to Private Equity? I am currently working for one of the big 3 management consulting firm in EU (Bain&Co). I have about 2 year of experience in this industry and no MBA (yet). How easy would it be for me to switch to private equity and which are the possible steps?
Can closed-end private equity fund sell new shares? There are 2 kinds of funds open-end and closed-end. I am wandering if a closed-end private equity fund could decide its fund is worth $1 billion, then just issue 10% new shares for 100 million. Why is it they raise 1 fund and only operate with that money they raised originally?
Can anyone recommend a good book about Private Equity? I'd prefer not to have to read a text book but I recently started working in the finance industry and I was an international affairs major, so I don't have much background info. I'm really looking to get a better understanding of the private equity market and its inner workings so a good book suggestion would be a big help in getting me there!

Why not start a private equity firm in developing countries? I don't see why more firms don't try to set up offices in developing countries. I am not talking about BRIC. More along the lines of Central and South America, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and others. I'd think that there would be less competition for deals here. The offices could be run by mostly graduates of that nation's universities. Maybe the deals would not be that big, but an experienced group should not have travel supporting themselves if they are a small boutique focusing in this "international business." Any thoughts? Just thought it was interesting.
What does this statement really mean regarding private equity firms? "reaping huge gains by piling debt on companies their firms have acquired, only to deduct the interest from their corporate taxes". I understand the statement, but do not understand how this is a successful strategy, or how they have a competitive advantage using this strategy.
How do you start on a career in private equity? I am about to qualify as an accountant in the UK with an ACA. I am increasingly interested in working in PE and investment management. I currently work in audit and so am looking to take the transferrable skills elsewhere. I am very keen to get away from 'accountant roles' and find more comercial work in these lucrative sectors.
What should I lookout for when investing in a Private Equity ? What are the obvious signs the company is a hoax or is failing? Any minimum regulations they should meet? Any insight will be helpful. Are movie equities good to invest in at this time? They never give out their financials and dont need to go public. They dont have any debt. They are 100% private investors. Also they float a new company for every new movie so their track record is only as good as the previous movie or maybe even that is dubvious.
are there any private equity manager contractor companies? I'm sure there must be such a thing as a private equity manager company, that hedge funds can outsource the actual trading decisions to. If yes what is the official industry name, and what are some of the market leaders? nvm....im thinking of an fof (fund of funds)
What is a fair Compensation and Bonus for Small Private Equity Fund? We've started a small investment group (less than $5m) in Tampa which will invest in restaurants and real estate. The 2 hands-on directors are investors in the fund, operate the 2 existing restaurants, and are tasked with opening more restaurants and finding real estate opportunities. What would be a fair salary and bonus incentive for them?
