What type of experience does someone need before they start a Private Equity Firm?

What job can you start out with in your younger years?

  1. There are a few paths to take if you want to end up in private equity. 1. Financial analyst. Be a data fiend. CPA and CFA are good certifications to work towards. Your first job will probably be as an exhausting, number-crunching drone for a bank or an investment advisor. 2. Law. Become a lawyer. You'll have to go to a good law school and get good grades. The only job that matters will be your summer associate work the semester before you get your JD. 3. Business. You will need an MBA. Your first positions should be as an intern or maybe an analyst at a bank. 4. IT. If you are a BRILLIANT programmer, you can do well in PE by writing software to ferret out good deals, crawl data, etc. You'll also need business school. In this case you could probably start anywhere, but you'll need to read books like Steve McConnell's Code Complete and hang out with financial analysts to understand their problems. Hope this helps.
